Blessing of the Animals
Part of this year’s Season of Creation (Sunday, Sept 19 through Sunday, Oct 10) will be a Blessing of the Animals. Doesn’t that sound like fun?
Dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, frogs, snakes, horses, cattle, creeping things, birds – literally, all are wel-come! We’ll sing, pray, and offer a blessing to each of the animals. So, bring your pets (leashed, caged, or well-mannered, please) or a photo of them. We’ll gather on the lawn by the outdoor stage at 6:00 PM and praise the One who made us all!
Why do we do this? Besides being fun, it’s a way to acknowledge that we are not alone in this world. We are related to every other creature on Earth, all of us the creative outpouring of God’s love.
October 4 is the day that our church annually re-members and gives thanks for the witness of Francis of Assisi, who said “Ask the beasts and they will teach you the beauty of this earth.” Fran-cis honored God’s creatures of all kinds and was said to have preached also to the ani-mals.
So this is a good day to remember that we are connected – not only to one another but to all that God has made. “In the beginning was the Word… all things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.” (John 1:1,3)
